CERCspeech

Members of the Chinese Academy of Forestry

Officials of the Guangdong Provincial government

Officials of the Zhanjiang Municipal Government

Scientists from other Chinese institutions

Scientists from throughout Asia and Australia

Distinguished guests

It is my great pleasure to say a few words at the opening of this international conference on eucalypts in Asia.  This conference is very timely as eucalypts are now making a significant contribution to the global forest plantation estate, not only in Asia but throughout the world.  This resource is now providing strong support to rural and industrial development, as well as assisting to alleviate rural poverty throughout the region.  The research efforts of organisations like the Chinese Academy of Forestry and others throughout Asia have been largely responsible for these developments and it is fitting that this conference is hosted by one of the Academy’s institutes, the China Eucalypt Research Centre

I would like to congratulate the China Eucalypt Research Centre, and Director Yang Minsheng and his staff for conceiving of this conference and for the considerable effort required to bring the idea to reality.  There is no more appropriate group in China to have undertaken the task given the Centre’s mandate for research on eucalypts in this country.

My organisation, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research is pleased to have been able to assist the CERC through support of some of the other Asian attendees to the conference.  I note the presence in the audience of a number of Australians who are or have been involved in collaborative research projects that have received ACIAR support and particularly colleagues from CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products and the Forest Science Centre.  I know that staff from both these organisations have worked on the conference organising committee and I’d like to thank them along with the Chinese members.  The strong Australian presence here today reflects the long association and research collaboration between Australian researchers and partner institutions throughout Asia and this collaboration has made a great contribution to the development of eucalypts as the major forestry crop it is today.

This conference will provide a valuable forum for exchange of information and ideas about the management and utilisation of eucalypts in Asia.  It will be an opportunity to for us to focus on the many research issues facing us today and in the future.  This meeting is the first and I hope not the last of its kind.  I look forward to the presentations and field trips over the next few days and to the opportunity to interact both professionally and socially with you all.

Thank you
