Tourist Information

There are innumerable opportunities for those participants who wish to experience something of the real China that lies beyond the conference and field tour venues. Guangdong province, where the conference will be held, is famous for its history, superb culture and scenery. In the area around Zhanjiang lie a number of fascinating ancient villages, vast beaches and coastline along with substantial areas of well preserved coastal mangrove forests.

Northern parts of Guangdong province have serene mountains and forests that provide wild and wondrous landscapes. Just a couple of hours drive to the east of Zhanjiang is the wondrous UNESCO world heritage site of Kaiping’s Diaolou’s (somewhat like watchtowers) which includes over 1500 significant tower like structures. The first of these towers were built during the early Qing Dynasty, and construction reached a peak in the 1920s and 1930s. About these fascinating structures UNESCO wrote "...the Diaolou ... display a complex and flamboyant fusion of Chinese and Western structural and decorative forms. They reflect the significant role of émigré Kaiping people in the development of several countries in South Asia, Australasia, and North America …”.

A short drive or train ride away from Zhanjiang lies the beautiful province of Guangxi. This is perhaps most famous for its magnificent limestone karst mountains intermixed with rivers, especially the Li River, around Guilin in the northeast of the province. Guangxi is also well known for its wonderful diversity of colourful ethnic cultures as it is home to many people of different ethnic minorities including Zhuang, Dong and Miao.

For those interested in seeing more of China, as a place to start we recommend purchasing a good travel guide book, such as one published by Lonely PlanetRough Guides, Insight Guides, Panda Guides and/or other publishers. Then, contact a reputable tour company or guiding service.

Citizens of most countries require a visa to visit China.

It is recommended that intending participants obtain an F visafrom the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home country. The F visa is generally issued to people intending to visit China forshort-term “non-commercial exchanges, visits, and inspections” such as scientific, educational, cultural, health or sports meetings and study tours.

Applying for an F visa will normally require you to have an official invitation letter from the conference organizing committee. If you would like an invitation letter to assist in obtaining a visa, please complete the appropriate details during the registration processes.

Please be aware:

1. the process of applying for a Chinese visa can take several weeks in some countries. It is wise to apply early for the necessary visa – F visas are usually issued  for  stays of 30 days, commencing from the date of arrival into China (rather than from the date the visa is issued);

2.Hong Kong has separate immigration and visa controls – citizens of many (but not all) countries may be able to visit Hong Kong for tourism or certain business-related activities for periods ranging from 14 to 180 days without having to obtain a visa.

To all Foreign Participants who need  to apply for a Chinese F visa,

Following the policy of the State Forestry Administration, conference participants must provide following documents to the conference Organizing Committee in order for us to complete necessary local procedures: a copy of the data page of your passport; and, a brief CV (1/2 page maximum).

Following completion of registration, the Conference Organizing committee will promptly be able to issue you with a conference 'Invitation Letter', which in many cases should be adequate for applying for a Chinese F Visa.

However, if the Chinese Embassy of your country request an 'Invitation Letter from a Duty Authorized Unit', please notify us immediately and we will organize this special Invitation Letter for you (after we receive the above documents), but please be patient for our response (this letter may take several weeks).

Getting to and from Zhanjiang

Most international visitors coming to Zhanjiang fly directly into Guangzhou or into Hong Kong, then transfer to a connecting flight to Zhanjiang (it’s about a 1 hour flight from either city to Zhanjiang).

Zhanjiang has a major airport and it is served by daily direct flights from most of the bigger 1st tier cities in China, including Beijing (1-2 times daily), Shanghai (2 times daily), Shenzhen (1 time daily) and Guangzhou (3-4 times daily). Sometimes, there is also a direct flight from Hong Kong to Zhanjiang (and return).

For the two days immediately preceding the conference (19th & 20th October), we will have a conference representative at Zhanjiang airport to greet delegates and help arrange their transport to the conference venue and hotels.  Zhanjiang’s airport is less than 20 minutes drive from downtown Zhanjiang and the conference venue.

Flights to Zhanjiang
1. Hong Kong to Zhanjiang
Direct flights from Hong Kong to Zhanjiang operate on an irregular schedule, and the days of operation and flight times are rarely announced more than a few weeks in advance. Usually, to fly from Hong Kong (HKG) to Zhanjiang (ZHA) it is necessary to first fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then transfer to a flight from Guangzhou to Zhanjiang.

An alternative, is to transfer from Hong Kong Airport direct to Shenzhen Airport using the SkyPier Ferry transfer service, and then take the late evening direct flight from Shenzhen to Zhanjiang (see below). Please email us if you need more advice about this option.

2. Guangzhou to Zhanjiang
There are up to 6 direct flights daily from Guangzhou (CAN) to Zhanjiang (ZHA) and return. These flights are operated by China Southern Airlines (CZ), and the flight time is around 1 hour.

It is also possible to travel from Guangzhou to Zhanjiang by express bus or long distance train - the travel times are around 6 hours. However, unless you can speak Chinese, are familiar with China and/or have done this trip before, we do not recommend this for foreign visitors (finding the right bus/train station, buying a ticket, etc. can be a major challenge).

3. Shenzhen to Zhanjiang
There is one direct flight daily from Shenzhen (SZX) to Zhanjiang (ZHA) and return.
The flight to Zhanjiang operates in the late evening, and the return flight to Shenzhen operates in the morning. This flight is operated by Shenzhen Airlines (ZH), and the flight time is around 1 hour.

4. Shanghai to Zhanjiang
Shanghai has two major airports: HongQiao (SHA) and Pudong (PVG). Most long haul international flights into Shanghai arrive at Pudong airport.

There are two to three daily direct flights between Shanghai Pudong (PVG) airport and Zhanjiang (ZHA). Two of these flights are operated by Shanghai Airlines (FM) and one by Spring Airlines (9C). The flight time is around 2.5 hours.

5. Beijing to Zhanjiang
There is one daily direct flight from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) to Zhanjiang (ZHA). This flight is operated by Air China (CA) and the flight time is around 3.5 hours.
